Project description

Project co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund under the Infrastructure and the Environment Operational Programme 2007-2013, Priority V – Environmental protection and shaping environmental attitudes, Measure 5.1- Supporting comprehensive projects regarding protection of natural habitats (ecosystems) in protected areas and sustaining biodiversity, in accordance with the Agreement POIS.05.01.00-00-214/09.

Project goals

Strategic objective:

Increase of biodiversity in Poland’s forest through the restoration of Taxus baccata L. within the natural range of the species.

Specific objectives:

  1. Increase of the yew population area in forests.
  2. Checking results of the previous protection of yew trees.
  3. Limiting scale of damages caused by deer in Taxus baccata L. stands.
  4. Improving growing conditions of selected T. baccata populations.

27 preservation plantations established in the 2004-8 period (location: Rokita, Henryków, Międzylesie, Kretówki and Baligród Forest District)

The most important task of the Project

  • the inventory of natural regeneration of yews in 14 selected Nature Reserves,
  • the inventory of artificial regeneration of yews in 27 preservation plantations established in the 2004-8 period,
  • specimen-level protection of yews renewing naturally, through the installation of guards or shelters around seedlings or yew undergrowth in four Nature Reserves
  • restoration of the yew within Skarżysko Forest District, through the planting of some 3500 seedling trees on 17 plots beneath the tree canopy in the Forest Sub-District of Majdów, compartment 20f)
  • tending of stands including yews at five Nature Reserves
  • upgrading of the fencing at the Prof. Stanisław Król Yew Reserve,
  • conservation work on the drainage ditch at the Tychowskie Yew Reserve.

Conclution

The populations of the yew that were assessed are considered to warrant active protection, given the degree of threat posed to many of the trees should tending work not be carried out. Tending should be applied in the case of both the mature trees and those of younger generations. Mechanical protection of individual saplings and low undergrowth should be resorted to more often than hitherto, and there is also a need for whole Reserves to gain more effective protection, in the event of an increase in the numbers of game animals, and hence also in the level of damage potentially or actually inflicted on trees. Quality assessments in regard to the preservation plantations for yew confirm the possibility of ex-situ protection making a contribution to the reinstatement of the species in Polish forests. However, attention needs to be paid to the criteria underpinning the choice of plot location for the introduction of saplings, as well as stand species composition and the provenance and quality of the material available for planting. Nevertheless, the results of project implementation leave no doubt as to the value of continued comprehensive work associated with monitoring of the natural development of yew populations, as well as with the regeneration of resources of this species in forest ecosystems.
