Abstrakt

The paper contains the results of monitoring research carried out in the whole Bialowieza Primeval Forest area in the years 1986-1996. The level, direction in changes and spatial distribution of dry and wet air pollution deposition were studied. The level of dry pollution deposition was high and it did not show any downward trends. The influence of local emission sources on the level of air pollution deposition was proved. Simultaneously, the state, level and direction of changes of the forest environment pollution were examined with bioindication methods. The acidity of tree bark: for four species:Pinus sylvestris, Picea abies, Quercus robur, Alnus glutinosa, and chemical composition of four plant bioindicators: Pinus sylvestris two-year-old needles, Vaccinium vitis-idaea leaves, and two moss species: Pleurozium schreberi and Sphagnum recurvum were analyzed. The level of forest environment pollution of the Bialowieza Primeval Forest was estimated as typical of the area of low pollution. Some unfavourable changes in pine needles’ chemical composition were noticed. These changes indicate that the.condition of trees in constantly deteriorating. The relation between air pollution deposition changes and bioindicators’ chemism were found. The paper presents the prognosis, up to the year 2010, for the Bialowieza Primeval Forest and the threat to its forest environment caused by air pollution.
