Abstrakt

Since 2000 a new bark beetle outbreak is developing in the Białowieża Primeval Forest. The inspection of threatened stands and the data concerning the volume of infested – standing and windblown – trees removed from the stands in individual forest compartments were used to estimate the status and dynamics of the bark beetle populations in 2000–2002. The analyses of the spatial distribution of infested trees (m3/ha in forest compartments) and the development of the bark beetle hotspots were done using the original simple digital map of the Białowieża Forest and the analogue maps concerning the threat to stands in subsequent years. The actual threat of the bark beetle infestation in the newly proposed nature reserves was assessed, and the forest protection strategy in the Norway spruce stands of the Białowieża Forest, threatened by bark beetles, was proposed.
